MAIA WEEKENDER 2025
MAIA Weekender: Curating The Culture
MAIA is in a period of transition. Over the last 12 years, MAIA has been in a place of asking questions, posing ideas, enquiries, speculations and experiments in communion around visions for a liberated world. We've been particularly exploring liberation through the lenses of land and space; creative practice and cultural production; and circular economics and resource redistribution.
Many of these speculative ideas and visions have been crafted, shaped and rehearsed by Black artists, in dialogue with our wider community. In 2025, we are going to respond to our own questions. The manifestation of this transition will lead to the materialising of ABUELOS, and a constellation of organisations that collectively ground in spatial justice, community economics and creative practice. We are going to build what we're longing for.
We’re thrilled to invite you to MAIA Weekender 2025: Curating the Culture, 7 - 9 March. Building on “Organising ABUELOS” back in October 2024, this weekend gathering will celebrate the legacy of MAIA's work as we transition towards ABUELOS.
Join us for a weekend of talks, performances, art exhibitions, food and more exploring three key themes. 1) Archiving and Storytelling 2) Building for Ourselves and Our Communities, and 3) Celebration. Expect familiar and new faces as we explore perspectives on our cultural practices, pride, history, and the connections that bind us.
We will honour what has been created, celebrate what we are creating now, and acknowledge the power of dreams - firmly believing they can become reality.
Throughout the programme, we will ask the following questions:
How do we produce and nurture both for the benefit of the artist and the community?
What does it mean to bear our stories, unspoiled, in their most basic and pure form, and out of the reach of those who would water down or alter them?
How do we gather our greatness, plant it, and build archives that will not die or be destroyed, but be and remain accessible for generations to come?
How can we make sure that our production is influenced by wisdom so that our communities can thrive and prosper in health and in wealth
Further details on the programme to come.
